Are Your Windows Working Against You?

Many homeowners adore natural light in their spaces. Rooms with lots of daylight make wonderful environments for people, plants, and pets. They help our bodies produce vitamin D while indoors, boost mood and productivity, regulate circadian rhythm, and improve sleep. Homes with abundant natural light can even be a better investment, as they tend to be in higher demand on the market.

But if your windows haven’t been upgraded, it’s likely that one, thin layer of glass is the only thing separating you from the all the heat, noise, and moisture right outside. The good news is, Massachusetts residents can access significant rebates on window upgrades thanks to Mass Save®. Before we get into the savings, here are some signs that you’re paying for AC that’s going right out the window:

Temperature Fluctuations

Unfortunately, the room in your home with the best natural light may be the room you avoid the most. The summer heat seeps in, and you either stay out or keep the curtains closed. Single-pane windows are poor insulators, easily allowing the transfer of heat in (in the summer) and out (in the winter). In addition, old caulk, weatherstripping, and cracks in the frames can make already inefficient windows drafty. Double- and triple-pane windows are much better at locking in your interior temperature and keeping your home consistently comfortable.

Moisture

Older windows can also cause significant moisture problems. Wooden frames can become spongey and rot. If you notice moisture building up on or around your windows, like water spots on walls near a window, spongey or rotten window frames, warped flooring below a window, or high humidity in your home, it’s time to have an expert take a look. Moisture issues not only signify inefficient windows; they can also lead to mold in your home.

Noise

Home comfort isn’t limited to temperature. Outside noise can seep in through your windows as well, and it’s probably affecting you more than you realize. Modern windows are better sound insulators and can add peace and calm to your personal sanctuary.

High Energy Bills

Your energy bill could be a clear indicator that your windows need an upgrade. No matter how new or efficient your heating and cooling system is, inefficient windows add unnecessary strain. Not only are you overpaying on summer AC and winter heat, but you’re also spending that extra money to overwork your system. This could likely shorten its lifespan and lead to expensive repairs sooner.

Mass Save Window Savings

If you have single-pane windows, you can qualify for a Mass Save rebate of $75 per window you replace with ENERGY STAR® Most Efficient windows. From there, “A typical home can expect savings of $101 to $583 a year,” according to Mass Save. Plus, “Lower energy consumption also reduces greenhouse gas emissions from homes.”

The first step towards taking advantage of these window savings is a no-cost Home Energy Assessment. Once a HomeWorks Energy Specialist does a full energy audit of your home, they can unlock Mass Save rebates and refer you to a window specialist.
